Hair loss and Alcohol

Alcohol and hair loss are closely related. You may not realise but by drinking too much you are actually starving your hair of the nutrients it needs to grow strong and health hair. Alcohol stops your body absorbing key nutrients vital for the hair growth process, with these minerals your hair will become limp and begin to fall out. If you drink regularly it may be a wise decision to cut back or cut out alcohol altogether before the damage becomes too bad.

Blocking absorption of key nutritients

Consuming to much alcohol has the adverse side-effect of blocking the absorption of nutrients needed to grow hair, especially the extremely important mineral Zinc. Zinc cant be stored by the body so relies on daily doses delivered by diet to prevent us becoming deficient. Unfortunately, even when consuming enough Zinc, we can become deficient as the body is stopped from taking up Zinc in the presence of alcohol. Zincs role in hair growth is to aid cell reproductiion, strengthening the hair and preventing breakage. If you notice your hair has become brittle and easily breaks, supplementing with zinc may be something for you to look into.

Alcohol can also cause deficiencies in Iron and vitamin B12. A good way to tell of you are Iron deficient is by your energy levels. Anaemia is brought on by Iron deficiency. the biggest sign of anaemia is chronic fatigue. A constant feeling of being tired or run down is caused by low Iron levels. Excessive alcohol consumption will result in low Iron levels and lead to both anaemia and hair loss
